As global travel opportunities become practically boundless; there is a growing need to provide secure travel documents and safe passport systems.
The passport, the traditional international travel document, makes it possible to identify travelers by visual verification. A photo printed in the passport is compared to the actual appearance of the person claiming to be the right passport holder.
The effectiveness of such a border control procedure essentially depends on two things: the identification security that the ID document provides and the verification process. And it is limited by two issues: the authenticity of the ID document and the data it contains, and the reliability of the visual verification process that the officer performs.
Over time, sophisticated security features have been developed and implemented in travel documents to increase technical obstacles for counterfeiters. This has reduced the risk of unauthorized persons creating secure documents.
The passport document (travel document) is part of a passport system comprising data capturing and data management systems for biographic and biometric data, personalization and border control systems. A public key infrastructure (PKI) is another essential component of an electronic passport system.

E-passports: The new and secure generation of passports:
As the challenges of international terrorism, organized crime, and illegal migration grow, so too have international efforts to implement processes, technologies, and systems for improved secure identification. These efforts are based on essential progress in the fields of biometry, microprocessor technology and cryptography. The passport holder’s biometric data, which includes facial images and fingerprint data, are stored on a contactless microprocessor chip that is integrated in the passport document and is machine readable. Access to the data, along with a guarantee of their integrity and authenticity, are ensured by advanced Public Key Infrastructures. As a result, the travel document and verification techniques and processes have made essential progress towards enabling the secure identification of travelers. The traditional passport, which allows visual identification, has been upgraded to a platform for electronic identification based on the passport holder’s unique and unforgeable biometric features. This upgraded document is known as the electronic passport (e-passport), or electronic machine readable travel document (eMRTD).
